A Ghost is a Memory.
Curator - December 3, 2020Welcome to European Ghosts, a Music Moves Europe Co-Creation project!
EUROPEAN GHOSTS is a new innovative co-creation and co-production project seeking to re-invent European Musical Heritage for the 21st Century.
From the Lusitanian Chordophones utilized in new ways by Portuguese artist collective Lusitanian Ghosts, O Gajo, or OMIRI, there are several artists across Europe re-inventing European Folk Instruments that would otherwise be on the verge of extinction, rescuing instruments from oblivion in a way that has never been done before.
Europe is also home to an incredibly rich variety of ancient musical traditions still very much alive, such as the Sami Joik singing or the Portuguese Cante Alentejano traditions.
Through co-creation and experimentation across borders, based on these vibrant cultural references of musical traditions and the usage of ancient instruments like the Viola Amarantina from Portugal, the Nyckelharpa from Sweden, or vocal traditions like the Sami Joik singing open up new creative paths for reinvented European musical heritage.
Nurturing a special songwriting camp of European scope, this new kind of specific European repertoire created can then be used in unique story-telling moments, affording these artists a new songwriting network, developing new promotional methods, identifying their target audiences and connecting these special sounds of Europe to music departments in television and film, pointing the way forward to a new approach to European repertoire being created across Europe.
